Damian Marley‘s Stony Hill album returns to the top of the Billboard Reggae chart this week ahead of the 60th annual Grammy Awards.
Junior Gong and Chronixx are the hot favorites to take home the Grammy for Best Reggae Album this year, but with a Marley name behind him, Gong is traditionally favored to win the trophy. Chronixx’s Chronology album is currently at No. 6 on the chart. Whether or not this latest development will sway voters in the reggae Grammy category is yet to be determined.
Both Damian Marley and Chronixx released two well-received albums last year and both artists are deserving of the award, but only one can win. The other artists nominated in the Best Reggae Album category also released great albums, they include Morgan Heritage (Avrakedabra), Common Kings (Lost In Paradise), and J Boog (House Ting). This is the first Grammy nomination for Chronixx and Common Kings.
In a recent interview, Gong praised Chronixx for his effort while saying he is honored to be among this batch of nominees in the reggae category. “Some good albums are in the category this year,” Damian Marley said. “Chronixx put out a really nice album, which I listen to as a fan. I like that album a whole heap. Morgan Heritage, who are close family friends of mine, they have a good album out too, likewise J Boog. I am not so familiar with Common Kings, but everybody else I kinda know them music and we are all friends.”
Junior Gong already has three Grammys under his belt while Morgan Heritage won the covetous trophy in 2016. J Boog is now in his second consecutive nomination in the category. The annual Grammy Award will be held on January 28 at the Madison Square Gardens in New York. The show will be broadcast live on CBS Starting around 8 PM EST.
Legendary dancehall singer Diana King got married to her longtime girlfriend Mijanne Webster.
King is one of the most iconic female dancehall artists of all-time after breaking onto the scene in the early 1990s before breaking into the mainstream with hits like “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Shy Guy.” In 2012, she went public for the first time that she is a lesbian and while she received some backlash from some of her Jamaican fan base, she overwhelmingly received a lot of support from the vast majority of her fans.
Diana King and Mijanne has been dating since 2007 and only recently tied the knot. “As an artiste, who is LGBTQ, born and raised in Jamaica, I never thought I’d ever say ‘my wife’ in this lifetime,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “I am completely and sincerely grateful to all who fought and continue to fight worldwide for our deserved equality and human rights. My true personality is introverted and private, totally different from the me on stage. My hands are shaking as I write this post. For me, it is a sign that I am about to exercise courage because they shook like this when I came out in 2012. I am sharing this because I strongly believe visibility is vital for change and I’m gonna live it… authentically. I’s married now Celie! Love wins.”
“We woke up on Saturday morning and she said to me… ‘Babe, did you think that when we met in 2007, one day we woulda married??? After a short pause, I replied Yes… yes I did…’ I didn’t tell anybody I was getting married,” Mijanne wrote.
Diana King has been touring extensively in recent years despite not dropping any new music since 2011 when she released her last album, AgirLnaMeKING. Her debut album Tougher Than Love was released in 1995. The project peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae chart and 85 on the R&B chart. The album is also certified three times platinum in Japan and gold in the US.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have welcomed their third child a baby girl through a surrogate.
The couple’s surrogate gave birth to the baby girl on Monday, January 15th, weighing 7 lbs., 6 oz. Kim Kardashian confirmed the birth via her website in a post published yesterday. “Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy, beautiful baby girl,” she wrote. “We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special care. North and Saint are especially thrilled to welcome their baby sister.”
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are already the proud parents of a baby boy name Saint West and a baby girl name North West. The couple wanted a third child but Kim has a life-threatening condition name placenta accreta, which cause pregnancy complications when she was pregnant with her son Saint. Sources say the entire Kardashian clan are happy for the latest addition to their family.
Kanye and Kim welcomed their first child, North West, in 2013 and a year later the couple got married in a lavish wedding ceremony in Florence, Italy. The couple welcomed their second child in 2015 and last year they hired a surrogate for their third child. The couple recently moved into their mega-mansion in the Hollywood Hills so they have plenty room for their growing family.
The duo drop the collaboration over the weekend and it quickly became a trending topic in hip hop. One of the reasons why this song resonate so much is because of Meek Mill’s incarceration and fans are sending a message to the system to set him free. “Shout out my ni**as that stayed down, That’s why they still with me I came up, Got some money and look what they sayin’ now, Bet they tell you them ni**as, they stand up, I manned up,” Meek raps.
Both Meek and YFN Lucci pays homage to their friends and perhaps fans who are currently incarcerated by a justice system widely seen as bias against African American men. The single “Street Kings” will be featured on YFN upcoming album Ray Ray from Summerhill. The project is expected to arrive sometime this year.
Meek Mill has been incarcerated since November last year when he was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison for probation violation. His sentencing sparked widespread criticism from fans and his celebrity peers who accused the judge of using heavy handed tactics to send the Philly rapper to prison. His attorneys have also been actively fighting for his freedom, but so far they have been hitting roadblocks.
Last week, Eminem surprised the rap community with his “Chloraseptic (Remix)” with 2 Chainz and Phresher where he took a few shots at his Slaughterhouse comrade Joe Budden. A lot of us may say that the rapper turn podcaster cause this on himself when he called Eminem’s new album Revival trash. Likewise, a lot of us really think that the album is trash but still feels the need to protect Shady from certain critics like Budden who has never been shy about speaking his mind on any topic in hip hop.
Nevertheless, Eminem fired back without calling his name on the track and Joe Budden has since come out saying he doesn’t think that he was the one Em was dissing. Sources are now saying Em has another diss track coming and this time he will go directly after the “Pump It Up” rapper. “I think he (Eminem) feel some type of way about being targeted by someone he is close to as if there were some bad blood between them,” sources said.
D2 member Bizarre was one of the first to push back at Joe Budden on Twitter by calling him a traitor. “Never bite the hand feed u.. I never like to do anyway chump,” Bizarre tweeted. In case your wondering about the history between Joe Budden and Eminem here is a quick rundown. Budden was a member of Slaughterhouse, with three other rappers, Royce da 5’9″, Crooked I, and Joell Ortiz. Em signed the group to his Shady Records in January 2011.
Over the years, Budden has been a strong ally of Eminem until his harsh criticism of the Detroit rapper’s new album. So when Bizarre says never bite the hands that feed you, that is what he was referring to. Joe himself is no pushover when it comes to battle rap, remember his attack on Drake two years ago. But when it comes to raw battle rap, Eminem is one of the greatest of all-time, so it will be interesting to see if he responds to Shady.
