Thousands of fans poured out in Philadelphia on Monday for a Free Meek Mill rally.
The Dreamchasers rapper is currently serving 2-4 years in a state prison in Pennsylvania for probation violation. But his sentencing last week sparked a national debate about the criminal justice system and now his fans are demanding a review of the controversial sentence. Both hip hop fans and the rapper’s celebrity peers have been weighing in on the case and most are in agreement that the sentence was heavy-handed and unjust.
The rally started at 5 p.m. on Monday at Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center and the crowd later marched through the streets. There is no word yet on if any celebrities attended the rally, but some members of Meek Mill’s Dreamchaser crew were there to support the rapper. NFL star and the leader of the new wave of anti social injustice, Colin Kaepernick, has also weighed in with a message on Twitter.
“Sadly there are Black folks going through the same radicalized injustice(s) within the justice system that Meek Mill has experienced for over a decade EVERY SINGLE DAY,” he wrote. “This requires more than just gradual reform in laws—It requires a swift overhaul.”
The video clip below, show a section of the large crowd rapping Meek Mill’s intro to his album, Dreams and Nightmares. There are a lot of allegations around the judge in Meek Mill case, some sources say she was carrying a grudge against the Philly rapper and even comes from the same section of Philadelphia where Meek’s from. The latest allegation is that she tried to get the rapper to leave his management company Roc Nation and signed with a local Philly manager.

“When she requests he leaves his current management Roc Nation—which is one of the most important management companies in the world—and goes back to a local Philadelphia guy who has a spotted past because she had a personal relationship with him as manager, again, she’s doing something that a judge would never be doing, having a personal interest,” Meek’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, told Billboard.
Vybz Kartel highly anticipated appeal trial has been pushed back to a new date.
The dancehall artist’s appeal trial was originally set for February 19, 2018, but the case has been pushed back to July 9th next year. Vybz Kartel team of lawyers led by Tom Tavares-Finson filed a motion asking the appeal court judges for more time to prepare for the case. The motion was approved and a new date has been agreed upon. This means that the Gazanation deejay will have to wait an additional five months to know his fate.
Three weeks has been set aside for the July appeal trial where the defense will make its case that the artist was not given a fair trial due to the numerous issues with the case such as evidence tampering and witness intimidation. The prosecution team will also make their case for the conviction to stay in place by citing the numerous evidence against the four co-accused, Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John.
All four men are serving life imprisonment with Vybz Kartel getting the longest sentence before he gets a parole hearing. He will have to serve at least 35 years and by that time he will be 72 years old. His dancehall protege Shawn Storm and close friend Kahira Jones will have to serve 25 years before parole, while St John will have to serve 15 years minimum. The four men have been behind bars since 2011 and were convicted in 2014, which means they would have already served six years. All four men have maintained their innocence.
Despite his incarceration for half a decade, Vybz Kartel continues to dominate dancehall with his music. At one point he was under investigation by the correctional department for illegally recording music in prison. But he is still putting out a consistent supply of new music.
Eminem is frustrated with new wave of mumble rap music.
Eminem has a new song out with Beyonce, “Walk On Water” which will be featured on his upcoming album Revival, due this Friday.
Author Malcolm Gladwell and Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin kick-started their new podcast, Broken Record, last Friday and on the first episode they discussed Eminem new song “Walk On Water.” According to Rubin, Em explained the meaning behind the single and also spoke about his feelings on the current wave of new artists in hip hop and what type of music they are making, mumble rap.
“It’s mortality, not being Superman and what if I can’t come up with the best shit I wrote every single time?” Eminem said of the song. During the episode, the Def Jam Recordings co-founder opened up about a conversation he had with Eminem about the new wave of mumble rap and what it means for hip hop. He said that it’s very frustrated for Slim Shady who has a vested interest in descriptive rhymes and well-crafted bars.
“For him, it’s a little bit of a culture shock because there’s a new wave of Hip Hip that’s not really what he’s about, so he was just talking to me about how that felt,” Rick Rubin said. “I could see he was frustrated with [it].” Rubin also detailed working with Eminem saying he is unlike any other artists that he has worked with in the past just by his attention to detail and his keen interest in the music and culture.
“He’s fanatical to a point that I don’t think I’ve seen in anyone before just through his attention to deal,” the music producer added. “He has a perfect memory of everything about the music and he gets inside of it, and he writes to whatever is good or bad about it.” Listen to the podcast episode below.
Lil Yachty and Lil Pump are dropping a joint project on New Year’s Day.
Lil Yachty and Lil Pump are either trolling their fans or they are on the verge of dropping a joint album.
The two polarized young rappers made the announcement on Twitter on Sunday when Yachty posted a screenshot of a text conversation he had with Lil Pump. “Bro, we gotta do this tape, drop in January, or February, then go on tour,” the “Gucci Gucci” rapper said. The Teenage Emotions rapper then tweeted, “First Of The Year, We Promise” with a fingers crossed emoji.
Both rappers have released their debut project this year with Lil Yachty dropping his first full body of work, Teenage Emotions, in May. Despite cracking the top five on Billboard 200 chart, the album received mixed reaction from most hip hop fans forcing the rapper to admit that his brand is much more bigger than his music. He also made a lot pf headlines this year for his beef with veteran rapper turn podcaster Joe Budden.
Lil Pump released his self-titled debut album in October and that project also cracked the top five on Billboard 200. He is also getting a lot of attention for his viral hit “Gucci Gucci.”
