Kevin Gates is now a free man and the hip hop Twitter community is reacting.
The Baton Rouge rapper was released from prison on Wednesday morning in Illinois after serving 9 months in jail. He was originally sentenced to 30-months for a gun charge, so he was released on parole which carries some conditions like mandatory supervision and cannot be in possession of any firearm, at least until his probation ends. More details about his parole will be coming so check back with Dancehallhiphop.com regularly.
Last year he served six months in jail in Florida for an assault charge but upon his release, he was extradited to Illinois for the pending weapons charge. In that case, a warrant was out for his arrest, but this time there are no outstanding warrants, at least none that we are aware of. Kevin Gates has already made his first post on Instagram which has already racked up close to half a million likes within a few hours. “I’m Him,” he wrote in front a blacked out background.
Hip hop Twitter has been celebrating his release from prison all day. “Kevin Gates got 180 days in jail for kicking a fan who kept grabbing him, he tried to use the Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, but was denied. George Zimmerman followed and murdered an innocent 17 year old Trayvon Martin and was allowed to use the law. Trust me I understand,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Not all fans were happy about his release from prison. There were some trolls who were just hell-bent on making their voices heard. “Please keep Kevin Gates and that trash music locked up in prison where it belong,” one fan tweeted.

Rihanna attended the funeral of her slain cousin, Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne, in Barbados on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old Bajan pop star, real name Robyn Fenty, was spotted wiping away tears at the funeral service held in her hometown yesterday afternoon. Hundreds of well-wishers including family and friends of the singer and her cousin turned out to pay their respect. Sources told us that it was an emotional scene with Rihanna regularly having to be consoled by family members.
“It was very emotional for her and the family, she was very close with Tavon so it hit close to home, I can’t see her getting over this one,” sources said. The pop singer donned a cat eye white sunglasses to hide her eyes but it didn’t hide the tears flowing down her cheeks.
Tavon, 21, was shot and killed the day after Christmas while walking on a track close to his him. Police already arrested and charged a suspect with the murder. “RIP cousin… can’t believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms! never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man! #endgunviolence,” Rihanna wrote on Instagram.
The police report states that Tavon was shot multiple times at approximately 7 PM on Boxing Day while walking on a track close to his Eden Lodge, St Michael home. The lone gunman fled on foot but investigators quickly got some leads that lead to the arrest of Shawayne Dashawn Williams, 23, of White Hall #1, St. Michael. He is currently facing a capital murder charge which carries life imprisonment in Barbados. His next court date is set for January 31st where he is expected to enter a plea.
Rihanna has since made a plea on social media to end gun violence.
Floyd Mayweather is feeling extra petty today and Conor McGregor is on his mind.
At the moment Mayweather is winning this ongoing beef between the fight fighters on the mere fact that he defeated McGregor in an actual fight last year and bank hundreds of millions of dollars on top of it. There are some fresh talks about a followup fight but this time it could be an MMA fight which Conor McGregor is advocating for. It’s still not clear if the boxing legend will come back out of retirement for that one, perhaps he will if the money is right.
On Wednesday, Floyd Mayweather tweeted a rumored story about Conor McGregor having issues with some Irish cartels and that there may be a hit out on his head. According to the reporting, McGregor allegedly punched a member of the Irish Cartel sometime last year and there is a hit out on his head for almost a million euros. “I already f***ed you up in 2017 now they about to f*** you up in 2018. You’re about to start your new year off with a bang,” the boxer tweeted.
McGregor has since responded to the tweet saying, “I am the cartel.” These two fighters should take this beef off of social media and into the ring, perhaps MMA style this time.
Bob Marley’s grandson Skip Marley joins the lineup of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Skip is billed for day one of the annual music festival which usually pulls a massive crowd to Coachella Valley in mid-April. This show is set to take place on the weekend’s of April 13th to 15th and 20th to 22nd. This year’s Coachella is headline by Eminem, Beyonce, and hot new rapper Cardi B. Last year Beyonce pulled out of the event because of her pregnancy, but her fans will get a chance to see her in action for the first time in over a year.
Skip Marley had a great had a great year last year with a few solo hits as well as a guest spot on Katy Perry’s song “Chained To The Rhythm. Last year he released solo singles like “Lions” and “Calm” down which were all well received.
Last year, the single “Lion” was featured in a controversial Pepsi advertisement which was pulled by the company after getting backlash on social media. Some fans accused Pepsi of being toned deaf amidst a period of heightened racial tension between the police force and African Americans. Kendell Jenner also starred in the same ad and she too received some backlash.
G-Eazy is the latest celebrity to cut ties with H&M amidst racist ad that went viral.
The fashion brand has been getting some heat on social media since yesterday after it posted an ad on social media that wrecks of racism. Several celebrities who have been doing business with H&M have since cut ties including The Weeknd, who announced in a scathing tweet that he will immediately end his partnership with the brand. G-Eazy announced on Instagram on Wednesday that he too will end his partnership.
“Over the past months I was genuinely excited about launching my upcoming line and collaboration with @HM… Unfortunately, after seeing the disturbing image yesterday, my excitement over our global campaign quickly evaporated, and I’ve decided at this time our partnership needs to end,” Eazy wrote. The rapper added that he cannot allow his name to be associated with H&M as the brand quickly becomes toxic to any celebrity that does business with the company.
“I can’t allow for my name and brand to be associated with a company that could let this happen. I hope that this situation will serve as the wake up call that H&M and other companies need to get on track and become racially and culturally aware, as well as more diverse at every level,” he added.
H&M has since released a statement apologizing for the ad while vowing to get to the bottom of what happened.
Over the past months I was genuinely excited about launching my upcoming line and collaboration with @HM… Unfortunately, after seeing the disturbing image yesterday, my excitement over our global campaign quickly evaporated, and I've decided at this time our partnership needs to end. Whether an oblivious oversight or not, it's truly sad and disturbing that in 2018, something so racially and culturally insensitive could pass by the eyes of so many (stylist, photographer, creative and marketing teams) and be deemed acceptable. I can't allow for my name and brand to be associated with a company that could let this happen. I hope that this situation will serve as the wake up call that H&M and other companies need to get on track and become racially and culturally aware, as well as more diverse at every level.
