Tetsuya Yamagami, suspected of attacking former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, after whom the politician died and confessed to the crime. This is reported by NHK with reference to the Nara Prefectural Police Headquarters.
“Definitely I did it,” — Yamagami was quoted by a police spokesman. During interrogation, the man said that Abe was a member of “a certain group” to which he felt hostility, and therefore decided to attack the ex-premier.
On the morning of July 8, Abe was shot twice in the back while giving a speech in Nara in support of the Liberal Democratic Party. According to doctors, the politician was wounded on the right side of the neck, as well as the heart (in this place he had internal bleeding). The Nikkei, citing emergency services, reported that Abe allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest. The current Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said that the politician is in serious condition. A few hours later, he died in the hospital.
Yamagami was arrested at the scene of the crime. The 41-year-old man served in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in the early 2000s. Earlier, he admitted that he wanted to kill Abe, as he was dissatisfied with his policies.
According to police, Yamagami used a homemade weapon in the attack. During searches of the man's house, law enforcement agencies found explosives and several other objects that could be improvised weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing his condolences to the politician's family, called Abe “a wonderful person.” and said that he regularly communicated with him. He was an “outstanding statesman” who did a lot to develop relations between the two countries, Putin noted. Condolences were also expressed by American leader Joe Biden. “I am stunned, outraged and deeply saddened by the news that my friend Abe Shinzo, the former Prime Minister of Japan, was shot and killed while on the campaign trail. This is a tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him,— Reuters quotes him.
