NATO in the new strategic concept may designate Russia's actions as a direct threat, writes Bloomberg. Brussels' position may change if Moscow changes its behavior, the agency's interlocutor noted.
According to Bloomberg, the document also touches upon the topic of assistance to neighboring countries that may be subjected to aggression.
It is expected that the strategy will take its final form during the NATO summit, which will be held in late June in Madrid. The document was discussed the day before by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. This concept will guide the alliance for the next decade.
Commenting on the future concept, Stoltenberg said on May 15 that it will determine NATO's position for the “period of strategic rivalry”, Reuters reports.
Strategic the concept determines the long-term strategy of the alliance. It outlines NATO's security goals and objectives and, in particular, the challenges it faces.
The current NATO Strategic Concept was adopted in 2010. It notes the need for a “strategic partnership”; with Russia. The main tasks listed in it— collective defence, crisis management and cooperative security.

A report on alliance reform published in 2020 states that Russia is the main military threat to NATO until at least 2030.
NATO, after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, held extraordinary meetings several times and announced troop movements. Stoltenberg said in April that the alliance was working on plans to send a permanent and full-scale military force to the eastern borders to protect against a possible Russian attack. According to the Secretary General, NATO is in “the midst of a fundamental transformation.”
Russia, in turn, declares the threat from NATO and opposes its expansion. At the end of 2021, Moscow proposed draft security guarantees to Washington and Brussels, which included, among other things, the rejection of NATO expansion to the east. Negotiations on these documents did not produce concrete results. On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine.
In March, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed strengthening Russia's western borders due to the actions of the alliance countries.
On May 15, Finland officially announced its decision to join the NATO. According to the newspaper Expressen, on May 16, Sweden plans to apply for membership in the alliance. The Russian authorities said they would consider the entry of the Scandinavian countries into NATO a threat to the country's security. If Finland is admitted to the organization, Moscow will take military-technical measures, warned the Foreign Ministry.
