“Yes, wars are won or lost on the battlefield,” he said on Monday immediately after arriving at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, TASS reports.
Earlier, during a visit to Kyiv, Borrell said that the conflict in Ukraine “ must be won on the battlefield.” He also said that the EU will discuss the expansion of military assistance to Ukraine.
Borrell's words caused a negative reaction in Moscow. Thus, the speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin said that the head of the EU Foreign Ministry should be immediately dismissed by the member countries of the union, as he does not try to resolve the conflict through diplomacy.
Also, the chairman of the lower house of parliament added that such statements from Europe make it clear “what role Washington and Brussels assign to Ukraine.”
