They decided to rename the square of friendship with Moscow in the capital of Ukraine in honor of the heroes of Mariupol, and in Uzhgorod they want to rename more than 50 streets named after famous “Russian figures”
Vitali Klitschko
In Kyiv next month plan to rename streets, avenues and stations whose names are associated with Russia, said the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaliy Klitschko, according to his website.
He has already prepared a project to approve the name for the park in the Goloseevsky district in the south of the city in honor of the heroes of Mariupol. Previously, it was unofficially called the square of friendship between Kiev and Moscow. There was a corresponding memorial sign, but in July 2021 the Kiev authorities dismantled it.
The decision on the new name will be considered by the Kyiv City Council at the next meeting.
In his Telegram channel, Klitschko said that draft decisions had already been prepared on the renaming of streets, avenues and metro stations, the names of which mention Russia. The changes are planned to be adopted in a single package until May 9, he said.
Plans to rename the streets, the names of which mention “Russian figures”, were reported in Uzhgorod. The local city council announced on its Telegram channel that it allegedly compiled a list of addresses recommended for renaming, with the participation of city residents and “specialists from various industries.”
The list includes 58 streets, including those named after the writers Ivan Turgenev, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Alexander Griboyedov, composers Modest Mussorgsky, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Mikhail Glinka, scientists Kliment Timiryazev and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. It is also proposed to rename Yuri Gagarin Street and Alexander Pushkin Square.
