Israeli Ambassador Yakov Livne presented his credentials to the President of Poland. He promised to restore the Polish ambassador in the near future. Diplomatic relations between the countries became more complicated after the adoption by Warsaw of the law on restitution “Poland and Israel decided to improve relations” />
Presidents of Poland and Israel Andrzej Duda and Yitzhak Herzog agreed to normalize relations between the countries. The Polish leader announced this on Twitter.
“The first step has been taken. Ambassador Yakov Livne presented his credentials today. President Herzog has asked me to reinstate the Polish ambassador to Israel. I hope that this will happen soon,»— wrote Duda on Twitter.
The Duke on Twitter called the reception of Livne by his Polish colleague “an important step towards the development of Israeli-Polish relations.” and expressed his hope to soon receive a letter of credence from the Polish ambassador to Israel.
The new Israeli ambassador arrived in Warsaw at the end of February this year. Until November 2020, this post was held by Alexander Ben Zvi, who worked for a year.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry appointed Livne as head of the diplomatic mission back in September 2020, but the previous government did not support his candidacy. He received support only at the end of June last year.
In January 2018, the Polish parliament approved the “Holocaust law”, which criminalizes public statements that Poles either Poland is “responsible for Nazi crimes committed by the Third Reich” or else was involved in the genocide of Jews during World War II. In Israel, this was considered Holocaust denial.

Last August, Duda signed a law restricting the process of restitution of Jewish property. Descendants of Holocaust victims can now appeal against the seizure of property confiscated during World War II, only within 30 years from the date of such a decision. According to Duda, as practice shows, those who claim restitution are often figureheads.
After that, the Israeli Foreign Ministry recalled the chargé d'affaires in Poland “for indefinite consultations.” The new ambassador of the country, who was supposed to leave for Warsaw, remained at home, and the Polish ambassador was recommended to “continue his vacation in his country”; and use this time to “explain to the Poles what the Holocaust means to the citizens of Israel.” Warsaw promised to take symmetrical steps in response.
