Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on awarding combat veteran status to participants in a special operation in Ukraine, the document was published on the legal information portal.
Amendments are made to the law “On Veterans”, it was supplemented with the following provision: “Performance of tasks during a special military operation in the territories of Ukraine, the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic: from February 24, 2022.”
The State Duma approved the law on March 23 in three readings at once. The bill was introduced to the parliament by senators and deputies from United Russia, including Secretary of the General Council of the party Andrey Turchak, senators Viktor Bondarev, Alexander Karelin, Vladimir Kravchenko and deputies Andrey Kartapolov, Vladimir Shamanov, Dmitry Sablin and Andrey Krasov. 422 deputies supported the initiative.
After the adoption of the document, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin explained that the new status would give participants in the special operation the right to receive a variety of social support measures, including tax, transport and housing and land benefits, as well as utility bills on special conditions.
In addition, citizens who become disabled in the course of participating in hostilities will receive privileges.
Previously, only combatants in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Syria were considered combat veterans in Russia.
The state has already promised to provide the families of those killed and wounded during the special operation with measures of social support.
