Armenia violated the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, after contacts with Armenian and Azerbaijani representatives, the situation was resolved, the Russian Defense Ministry reported .
“In the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, one violation of the ceasefire regime by the Armenian side was recorded. There were no casualties,— cites a statement by the TASS Ministry.
The Russian military, as part of a peacekeeping mission in Nagorno-Karabakh, is monitoring the situation at 27 observation posts, the Defense Ministry added. Russian peacekeepers escorted four columns of Azerbaijani military along the Lachin corridor and conducted patrols in several areas.
The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh has dragged on since the early 1990s and escalated again in the fall of 2020, when Armenia and Azerbaijan fought for 44 days. With the mediation of Russia, Yerevan and Baku signed an agreement in November 2020 that provides for the deployment of a Russian peacekeeping mission on the line of contact.
It also contains clauses on the withdrawal of Armenian troops and the unblocking of all economic and transport links in the region. The terms of the agreement also included the transfer of the city of Shushi, Kalbajar and Lachin regions under the control of Azerbaijan. In the case of the latter, an exception is made for the corridor that provides transport links between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
The situation escalated again in March 2022, when Azerbaijani forces occupied the village of Parukh (Azerbaijan Farukh) in the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan “raised the need to investigate the actions of Russian peacekeepers”, and the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to increase the number of peacekeepers in the region.
