The EU is negotiating the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, it is planned to be introduced before April 8. The European Commission proposed to include in this package a ban on the import of coal from Russia in the amount of €4 billion per year, as well as timber, cement and seafood. However, EU ambassadors were unable to agree on new sanctions at a meeting held the day before, Reuters wrote. So, according to him, it was not possible to resolve technical issues, including the question of whether the ban on coal exports will affect already signed contracts. The agency later reported that a total ban on Russian coal imports is planned for mid-August, not July as planned. This is due to “German pressure”.
The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, noted that Russia would respond to the sanctions “as it sees fit.”
