Three Georgian fighters were killed in Ukraine, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said on Facebook. He offered condolences to the families of the victims. “Our support for the Ukrainian people is unshakable”, — stressed the speaker of parliament.
Earlier, on March 18, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported the death of two citizens of the country in Ukraine, their names were Gia Beriashvili and David Ratiani, the Georgian Channel One broadcast.
On March 1, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the recall of the ambassador from Georgia “for obstructing volunteers” who want to help Kiev resist the Russian military. Chairman of the ruling party “Georgian Dream” Irakli Kobakhidze then called Zelensky's decision inconsistent. “There was a direct attempt [in Georgia] to organize the sending of volunteers to participate in the conflict, it was not achieved, and this was followed by this very sad step,” Kobakhidze is sure.
The Georgian authorities also stressed that they did not intend to help send volunteers to Ukraine. “The government will not arrange for volunteers to be sent [to Ukraine]. This can be perceived as participation in hostilities,»— Vladimir Chachibaya, deputy head of the parliamentary committee on defense and security, explained.
Prior to this, Georgia refused to join the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia because of the military operation. At the same time, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed “full solidarity and support” Ukraine and called “an attack on a sovereign state” unacceptable.
“Our government, within its capabilities, is doing everything to provide political and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,”— added the head of the Georgian government.
