Johnson will announce that British stores will be able to return to the imperial system of measures and weights: merchants will once again have the right to sell goods in ounces and pounds. The United Kingdom will not abandon the metric system on Johnson's plans to allow sales in pounds and ounces” />

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has decided to return the country to the use of the British imperial system of weights and measures, reports the Mirror, citing government sources. According to them, this will be officially announced on Friday, June 3, coinciding with the celebrations in honor of the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Prime Minister is expected to say that UK stores will be allowed to sell goods in ounces and pounds (one pound is 453g, one ounce is 28.3g). Downing Street sources say it hopes this will help the Conservative Party bolster voter support that it risks losing amid the Johnson scandal and parties at the height of the pandemic.
Mirror notes that the return of the British imperial system— rather a symbolic step, as both metric and imperial systems are now used in the United Kingdom (the latter with restrictions).
Britain began to use the metric system of measures as the main one in 1995. Since 2000, when the EU directive on the system of measures and weights came into force, sellers of fresh products must measure the product in grams and kilograms, which has caused criticism from euroskeptics, the Guardian notes. Prices in pounds and ounces are still allowed, provided that they are also quoted in grams and kilograms.
According to Mirror, the metric system will not be eliminated, but sellers will be free to choose which units measurements to use.
Johnson promised to return the use of the imperial system in stores during the 2019 election campaign, the newspaper recalls. Earlier, The Independent wrote that British sellers called for the return of pounds and ounces to circulation after the UK left the EU.
