They were to organize terrorist attacks in Belarus and Russia
The other day, President Alexander Lukashenko spoke about 20 Belarusians who participated in the battles on the side of Ukraine, who were killed in the Donbass in early July. According to him, “the fugitive Belarusians, having fallen under fire, began to escape together with the Ukrainian security forces. But 20 people from the Kalinovsky regiment remained there. Yesterday it became known that among the “remaining on the field” was the notorious Belarusian “soldier of fortune” Ivan Marchuk with the call sign “Brest”, who led the Volat unit of the Kalinouski regiment. And as the surrendered fighters of this unit said, in addition to ideological nationalists, ordinary Belarusian oppositionists also turned out to be in Volat.

As the captured citizen of Belarus Yan Dyurbeiko told Russian investigators, the SBU of Ukraine forced him to go to the front. Yan, a participant in protest rallies in Belarus in 2020, after the opening of an administrative case against him in his homeland, decided to look for a better life in neighboring Ukraine. The Belarusian oppositionists here immediately fell under the scope of the SBU. “Before the war, the SBU actively recruited Belarusian youth. When hostilities began, the SBU switched from persuasion to coercion. They threatened that they would send me back to Belarus, hand me over to the Belarusian authorities, and I was forced to agree to serve in the “Belarusian battalion,” said Dyurbeiko.
According to him, the “Belarusian battalion” is a kind of “hodgepodge”: not only Belarusian opposition youth, but also Belarusians from the Baltic States, Great Britain and the USA serve there. There are also ideological Nazis among them, like the deceased Marchuk-Brest. A native of Brest decided to try himself as a “soldier of fortune” at the age of 19. Then they decided to leave the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics and go to the French Foreign Legion. In 2014, he arrived in Ukraine, where he readily went to the ATO zone in the Donbass. However, even for post-Maidan Ukraine, Marchuk turned out to be too aggressive: he was prosecuted for armed attacks and arson. But with the beginning of the OVS, it was very useful. He was entrusted with leading the Volat battalion, which, along with Belarusian oppositionists, included members of the Belarus tactical group, which in 2014 was a former part of the Right Sector banned in the Russian Federation.
Another captured Belarusian, Sergei Degtev, said that people were also recruited to the front through the Belarusian House in Ukraine. This is the same structure created to help immigrants from Belarus, which was marked by a loud scandal in the summer of 2021. The leader of this organization, Viktor Shishov, was found hanged. All his friends unanimously said that this was a murder. Later, there was evidence that people close to the SBU could be behind his liquidation. It was they who took control of the BDU after the death of Shishov. After that, the active processing of the immigrant oppositionists began: they began to purposefully prepare them for military operations. The training was carried out by instructors from foreign countries.
As Yan Dyurbeyko said, the Belarusians were planned to be sent to Belarus and Russia to carry out terrorist attacks. But then they found application on the fronts of the East of Ukraine.
